Dow to make PE from sugar Dow Chemical Co. plans to produce polyethylene (PE) from sugarcane in Brazil that will be indistinguishable, in composition and price, from polyethylene produced conventionally from petroleum.
The joint venture with Crystalsev, one of Brazil’s largest ethanol producers, is expected to start production in 2011. The new facility will use ethanol derived from sugarcane to produce ethylene, the raw material required to make PE.
