Future gazing

Ten years ago the BBC launched its news website, when only early adopters might have foreseen a day with news available online, on the move and on hand-held gadgets.
But children born in 1997 have known nothing but a wired world; so we asked 10-year-olds at Norfolk’s Millfield Primary School how we might receive the news in the future.

A great way of working!!! really intereasting.

Social project

Twelve teenagers are being given the chance to take part in a radical social experiment. For three weeks they will be left alone to create and run their own school, from scratch.

Under the teenagers' supervision is a group of spirited twelve-year-olds. As well as having a real budget to manage, the teenagers have to feed their pupils, organise activities, entertain and teach them, delivering a curriculum that covers academic and creative subjects.

The teenagers’ school is also subject to regular inspections to make sure it's maintaining standards.

Jails adapted for foreign inmates

The Prison Service has converted two jails so that they hold only foreign national prisoners, it is revealed. Bullwood Hall, Essex, and Canterbury Prison, Kent, have been taking foreign offenders since the 2006 crisis over prisoners who had not been deported.

The Ministry of Justice said the jails which have immigration and language services were part of a plan to deport as many foreign prisoners as possible. More than 11,000 of the 81,000 prison population are foreign nationals.

Students observations

We had a mini project where the students were looking for different definitions of word within the contexts of observing products and how people observe them.
I think that all of the participants learned looking is just as important as designing in a studio and can throw up interesting solutions. Good work guys, a few examples above.

WAGENINGEN, Netherlands (Reuters) - Does service with a scowl put you off at lunch? Will you eat more greens if you are surrounded by plants? Does romantic, pink lighting encourage you to linger over your fruit salad?

A new research center -- dubbed the "restaurant of the future" -- at the Dutch university of Wageningen hopes to help answer these questions and more by tracking diners with dozens of unobtrusive cameras and monitoring their eating habits.

Design for the MOD

Design for the MOD can be the most functional, considered and User centred. The objects must be well made, practical and durable. There are many technologies that have been developed for the MOD that have led to advances.
